Tough Ten 2009

22nd February 2009 see's the annual Weston-super-Mare Tough Ten,

this year raising funds for Weston RNLI!

Help us to save lives today by joining Team RNLI in 2009's Tough Ten Challenge!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is delighted to have been chosen as the official charity for the 2009 Tough Ten Challenge. The 10 mile multi-terrain race goes ahead Sunday 22nd February, in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset and has a 2 hour time limit! To download a copy of the route click here.

From 2001 to date in 2008 our lifeboats have launched 344 times. They have rescued 215 people, including swimmers, leisure craft users, windsurfers, fishermen and people stranded by the rising tide. The Weston-super-Mare Crew lives within the local community and are all volunteers, giving up their time and risking their lives by responding to launches at a moments notice.

MAYDAY

Thursday 28th August 2008

RNLI crews in Weston were called to help a lifeboat from Portishead when it started taking in water.

The lifeboat crew of three were training around Clevedon Bay last night (Thurs) when they got into difficulty and made the Mayday distress call.

Two boats from Weston were sent out after the call at 8.40pm.

RNLI volunteer Liam McDermott said: "The boat was damaged and they were taking in a lot of water.

"We took them back to the lifeboat station and didn't finish the operation until about 1.30am.

"The important thing to remember now is that both the lifeboat and the RNLI are volunteers and the Portishead crew are going to have to raise money to pay for their boat.

"This just goes to show that it can be dangerous on the water and if you do get caught out things can go wrong very quickly.
"The crew did the right thing by putting out a distress call. They have nothing to be embarrassed about as this can happen to anyone.
